There’s no doubt that winter’s the least popular of our four seasons. However, it has a few plus points – and fashion’s one of them. The weather may be awful, but it's a true season of style. So if you want to look good and keep warm for the coming winter, follow our tips for the top.
As we head into October, the tartan craze shows no sign of flagging. The famous Scottish design’s been splashed on shirts, skirts, trousers – and this fabulous jacket. Not only is it stylish, but it’s great for battling the chilly climate.
Skinny jeans may be fashionable, but they’re not the most comfortable of clothing. So prise them off, throw them out, and go for something totally different. These wide leg trousers are the next big thing, which are a change to the rock and roll tight fit that plagues the High Street. So dare to be different and invest in a totally new style.
Last fashionable in the 1950s, it seems that designers have given knitwear another chance to shine. The chunky design’s been dragged from the past, sprinkled with chic, then launched head first into the noughties. It’s an ideal look for the coming winter – and one that’ll keep out the cold, too.
Back in the 90s, Liam Gallagher single-handedly made the parka one of the must-have items of the decade. But its popularity seemed to dwindle along with the mono-browed brothers’ band. However, with a revamped look and obligatory snugness, it’s back from Britpop and keen to show who’s boss.
One week it’s in, one week it’s out. The fickle world of fashion changes its mind like the British weather, but some items never go out of style. And for men, it has to be the leather jacket. From the slim fit Ramones look to a classy, refined style, it’s an ever-dependable item. They may not be cheap, but they’re worth every penny.
From the Beatles ‘Sgt. Pepper’ outfits to the Libertines’ striking uniform, the military jacket’s always been a rock and roll favourite. However, this season’s range has an upmarket, smarter tone. The cut's pretty much the same, but the style has more in common with a shirt, tie and trousers than skinny jeans and t-shirts.
Another style that’s very much alive and kicking is geek chic. The look’s been around for ages, but still adorning the trendiest of fashionistas. If you’re behind with the times, most top name shops have a wide range of fitted cardigans that lean very much towards the chic side of geek.
In 2008, jeans and t-shirts are no longer number one for laid-back casual wear. This season, dressing up's the new dressing down. Whether it’s a glitzy awards bash or night at the pub, celebrity folk like Mark Ronson are permanently dressed up to the nines. And the High Street has all the kit you'll need, from black macs to pointed lace-ups.
