While most people dread the coming of winter, sports fans welcome it with open arms. The weather may be cold, but it brings a barrage of thrilling activities. From snowboarding and skiing to ice skating and sleighing, it's truly a season of excitement. And if you're not a fan of the chilly conditions, now's the time to take a well-earned break.
When it’s freezing cold and dark by 6pm, the gym’s the last thing on our minds. All we want to do is curl up on the sofa and watch TV. So why not combine the two? By spending a few pounds on an exercise bike or rowing machine, you can stay trim in the comfort of your own home.
If you’re tired of the chilly UK weather, pack your bags for a winter break. These days, budget airlines offer flights to the likes of Spain, Italy and Portugal for next to nothing. But if you really want to splash out, head for one of the faraway shores. Places like Kenya, Goa and Thailand are currently in their summer, so a suntan’s pretty much guaranteed.
Skating’s popular all year round, but it’s just not the same in summer. There’s nothing like wrapping up with a scarf and gloves before hitting the ice. But forget frozen lakes – play it safe by supporting your local ice rink. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or novice, anyone can join in the action.
It’s important to take time for yourself, especially during gloomy October. So forget your laptop, switch off your phone, and take time to relax. Treat yourself to a night out, catch a film at the cinema, or book a table at your favourite restaurant. By taking regular breaks, you’ll soon notice a lift in spirits and a clearer, sharper mind.
Snow-covered mountains are pretty hard to come by in the UK, but artificial slopes aren’t. But before digging out your snowboard or skis, you’ll need to look the part. The universal uniform is baggy trousers and a thick, padded jacket, which offer room to maneuver whilst keeping you warm. However, they won’t stop you from falling flat on your face.
With their feet growing bigger by the day, kids tear through shoes like the Incredible Hulk. You can be certain that last season’s football boots no longer fit, or have been totally destroyed. But these days, most sports stores have an excellent range of boots from the likes of Nike, Reebok and Puma, all at prices that won’t break the bank.
If you like skiing but don’t appreciate the cold, Nintendo have the answer. Their new Wii Winter Sports let’s you take part in classic events, from bobsleigh and speed skating to ski jumping and figure skating. Play in campaign mode and battle against the computer, or go for gold against your mates.
