Everyone’s health takes a dip during colder months. And the chilly weather doesn’t just affect our bodies, but our state of mind, too.
The upbeat nature of summer’s been replaced with a downbeat slump. But don’t let the season get the better of you. We’ll show you how to sail through ‘til spring with a healthy mind, body and soul.
Seasonal fruit and vegetables are used in many of our beauty product we buy. So to live a longer, healthier life, it’s time to get back to nature. Ginger’s a warming spice that’s great for pain relief during massage. Then there are mushrooms, which are an anti-ageing and skin brightening wonder. And, of course, there’s the cucumber, that's long been used to cleanse the skin and treat puffy eyes.
This season, Pop Punk’s the hottest beauty look. It’s all about bold playfulness with bright, psychedelic splashes across the eyes. This arty style was splashed all over the catwalks this summer, from the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Chrisitan Dior – and now it’s about to hit the High Street. So be creative and use your face as a blank canvas.
Finally, it seems someone’s cured the common cold. Australian scientists claim to have created a breakthrough pill that treats the famous condition. It's called BTA798, which works by attaching itself to the cold-causing rhinovirus, stopping it from breaking into the body’s cells. However, it won't be released until 2010, so stock up on vitamins C and D to stay fighting fit.
If you suffer from seasonal affective disorder, this time of the year can be particularly tough. However, a study by the National Literacy Trust has shown that reading can make us happier in life, work and even relationships. So drop the TV remote and dive into a paperback for a happy, cheerful October.
Despite the coming of winter, it seems we just can’t let go of sunnier months. Fresh, zesty beauty products are flying off the shelves, leaving darker, seasonal items in the dust. Tropical body butters and lotions are particularly popular, which offer and invigorating lift that’s like smothering your skin with pure sunshine.
Worried about the effects of ageing? Well, forget nipping and tucking - the answer lies with something far simpler. A recent study’s found that Thai holy basil – a close relative of the cooking variety – contains anti-ageing antioxidants that protect against cancer-causing chemicals that attack our vital organs. So for a longer, healthier life, switch to the magical herb when cooking.
The bitter weather can turn your supple kissers into something cracked and painful. So to battle the climate, you’re going to need some protection – and moisturising lipsticks are the answer. These are a must have item in cold weather, which come in a range of seasonal shades and flavours.
During summer, our sweet tooth takes a back seat as we happily munch on fresh fruit and salads. But when the sun starts to fade, we seek solace in the comforting arms of chocolate. However, recent studies have shown this isn’t so bad. Grazing on two squares every day for a fortnight can beat high blood pressure and reduce the risk of diabetes.
