He’s back. The Dark Knight is finally here and it’s this Summer’s must-see movie.
When it comes to sequels, Hollywood’s churned out more turkeys than Bernard Matthews. From The Exorcist Heretic to Ocean’s 12, the list of duds is endless. Thankfully, The Dark Knight isn’t one of them. In fact, it joins an elite club of sequels that manage to improve on the original.
Once again, Christian Bale’s back in the Batsuit, ready to clean up the mean streets of Gotham. But for how long? It seems Bruce Wayne’s tired of life as the Caped Crusader and wants the police to take over his role. That’s until a certain pale-faced criminal decides to wreak havoc on the city. And if you didn’t know, it’s The Joker that’s got a bat in his belfry.
And therein lies real star of the show. Although the role’s been played before, Heath Ledger manages to bring something fresh to the Joker’s character. Darker than Jack Nicholson, less camp than Cesar Romero, his menacing performance has ‘Oscar’ stamped all over it. But unfortunately, it’ll be a posthumous award. Tragically, Ledger died shortly after wrapping the film.
Summer blockbusters are usually pretty bland, but Christopher Nolan’s managed to pull something truly special out the bag. With blistering action, dazzling cinematography and a cast to die for, it’s an absolute stunner of a movie.
The Dark Knight opens on July 25th, with special previews on July 24th.
